This systematic review included 12 original studies of PBT reirradiation for brain/base of skull tumor recurrences. The available clinical data showed that PBT can provide good local control with acceptable toxicity rates. The authors commented that the recently released ASTRO model policies included PBT reirradiation in Group 1 indications which means that there is no need for comparative effectiveness analyses for using PBT in these cases, being its use justified by the reduction in cumulative dose to critical organs, however, reirradiation needs to consider several factors that can increase the risk of toxicities. Therefore, patient selection is crucial.
