Executive summary

This meta-analysis from Brazil included 32 studies that reported outcomes of different radiation modalities for skull base chordoma. The 5-year OS findings were 77% in photon fractionated radiotherapy, 76% in conventional fractionated radiotherapy, 85% in proton-based + carbon ion-based radiotherapy; and an OR of 1.2 in a comparative analysis bewteen PBT and CIRT. The findings for the 5-year PFS were 35% for photon fractionated therapy; 35% for stereotactic radiotherapy; 77% for proton-based and carbon ion-based radiotherapy; and 74% for proton-based radiotherapy. For PBT and CIRT, the 5-year LC rates were 76% and 75%. The authors concluded that PBT and CIRT were the most effective radiation therapies available for the treatment of skull base chordoma.
