Proton therapy for intracranial meningioma: a single-institution retrospective analysis of efficacy, survival and toxicity outcomes.
This review included 57 papers reporting patient outcomes related to PT treatment of CNS/skull base tumors in adults. The treatment results of PT for gliomas (WHO 2, 3 glioma and glioblastoma), chordomas and chondrosarcomas, meningiomas, pituitary adenomas, vestibular schwannomas and craniopharyngioma were evaluated, as well available data of cost-effectiveness was discussed in this review. The authors concluded that the current evidence showed comparable local control and overall survival rates with proton compared to photon-RT, however the potential reduction in side effects cannot be objectified at this time because data on neurological/neurocognitive outcome and QoL are missing on a large scale.
