Proton beam radiation therapy for vestibular schwannomas – tumor control and hearing preservation rates: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
This meta-analysis included 8 primary studies with a total number of 587 patients with vestibular schwannomas treated with proton radiation. Overall rate of tumor control (both stability and decrease in volume) was 95.4%. Overall rates of trigeminal nerve preservation (absence of numbness), facial nerve preservation and hearing preservation were 95.6%, 93.7% and 40.6% respectively. The authors concluded that PBT achieves high tumor control rates, however, facial nerve preservation rate is lower compared to the most recent SRS series. PBT for vestibular schwannomas does not offer an advantage for facial and hearing preservation compared to most of the currently reported SRS series.
