Impact of intensity-modulated proton therapy in reducing radiation-induced lymphopenia in glioma patients.
This study from the group of Apollo Chennai, India, compared radiation-induced lymphopenia (RIL) in patients with WHO grade 2-4 gliomas treated with IMPT or IMRT. 72 patients treated with IMPT and 69 patients with IMRT were included for analysis. The incidence of any degree of lymphopenia (48% in IMPT vs. 81.2% in IMRT, P = .001) and severe lymphopenia (8% in IMPT vs. 24.6% in IMRT, P = .093) were both significantly lesser in patients who received PBT. Severe RIL in patients receiving PBT was seen in only CNS WHO Gr-4 tumors.
