Executive summary

This study from the group of Shanghai Proton and Heavy Ion Center, China, reported outcomes of 82 patients with major salivary gland tumors (MSGTs) treated with particle beam therapy, including using proton (n = 17), carbon ion (n = 46), or a combination of proton and carbon ion therapy (n = 19). The 3-year OS was 94.3%, PFS 81.3%, locoregional control (LRC) 97.2% and 82.6% for distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS). One patient experienced a grade 3 acute mucositis and no cases of grade 3 or higher late adverse responses were observed. The authors concluded that particle beam therapy is a potentially safe and efficient treatment option for newly-diagnosed MSGTs.
