Use of single-energy proton pencil beam scanning Bragg peak for intensity-modulated proton therapy FLASH treatment planning in liver-hypofractionated radiation therapy.
The paper published by the group from New York Proton Center reported successful PBS Bragg peak FLASH planning for on 10 consecutive hepatocellular carcinoma patients previously treated by IMPT-SBRT. The FLASH plans were created to deliver 50 Gy in 5 fractions with similar or identical beam arrangement to the clinical IMPT-SBRT plans. Based on the NRG GI003 dose constraint metrics, this study reported comparable dosimetric quality of the FLASH plans to the conventional IMPT-SBRT plan, while achieving a sufficient FLASH dose rate for liver cancer.
