Proton Arc Reduces Range Uncertainty Effects and improves conformality compared with photon volumetric modulated arc therapy in stereotactic body radiation therapy for non-small cell lung cancer
A comparison between planning of conventional proton stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), passive scattering proton arc therapy (Passive Arc), intensity modulated proton arc therapy (IMPT-Arc) and photon volumetric modulated arc therapy (Photon-VMAT), showed that IMPT-Arc can yield more conformal dose distributions compared to both Photon-VMAT and proton SBRT. The advantage of Passive Arc and IMPT-Arc over Photon-VMAT, was the significant reduction of the lung low-dose values. The advantage of Passive-Arc and IMPT-Arc over proton SBRT was the significant sparing of nearby organs, such as the chest wall.
